Cards To Watch From Marvel's Spider-Man

The next age of Magic is here, with Marvel joining for a major multi-set adventure across the multiverse, and this journey will feature Spiders (yes, you read that correctly). Hopefully you've secured your Swarmyard cards early. Marvel will be an ongoing presence in Magic, with many more sets arriving, particularly over the next few years.

With that, I have two solutions in mind: Delve in fully, whether you’re a fan or not, and enjoy the sets; Or, alternatively, skip the sets completely and consider purchasing singles if that's your preference. I took the second approach with Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy, and I didn't feel like I had missed out on anything special.

The connection with Final Fantasy was on purpose, as I want to touch upon the fact that the price of Collector Boosters and Boxes for these products is ever-increasing. At this point, I don’t see any indication on serialized cards being present in Marvel's Spider-Man, which should help curb prices. However, there's no guarantee that this won’t change in subsequent sets.

My best guess is that since we haven’t seen a serialized Infinity Stone - and there isn’t a 1-of-1 either - then the likelihood that the rest will be is quite low.

End Stone

The Soul Stone is the first card worth a deep dive into. Based on how the preview has worked and the initial impressions, it feels reminiscent of The One Ring. While the power level definitely is not on the same scale and it won't create the same splash across different formats, it positions itself as a staple right from the start.

In formats like EDH, cEDH, and Canadian Highlander, this will likely be a shoo-in. For 60-card formats, the inclusion gets a bit trickier. The Soul Stone is outpaced by fast mana in those environments, and changing to a slower pace of play would be detrimental to many decks.

Regardless, I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot of The Soul Stone and the subsequent additions to the cycle in future sets. Considering the presented power level and anticipated demand, I think this Stone, along with the rest, may settle between the $75-100 range. In a worst-case scenario, the price will go through to the $125-150 range and remain there for the foreseeable future.

Rent Is Due

As far as the main set is concerned, I’m honestly surprised that there aren’t more legendary cards included. Given the previous Universes Beyond sets pushing 100+ new legendary permanents, we’re getting a slightly reduced quantity thus far, outside of the arena renaming, of course.

Focusing on the main set, there are several cards that I’m more curious about than others. Firstly, anything with mayhem printed on it will be on my short list, as the mechanic is quite strong and will lead to a small upgrade here and there. For example, in Modern, Grixis Reanimator is likely to include Oscorp Industries as another fixer they wouldn’t mind pitching to Psychic Frog.

Still thinking about the lands, any of the tri-color lands here are unique enough that they’ll likely become great utility pieces in the long term, with no great reprinting opportunities in the future. I’ll likely pick up a handful of copies myself, hedging that in 1-2 years they’ll make a neat investment.

From all the Spiders included, it’s hard to guess the popularity of one over the other without being in the know of the media. Not being super in tune with the franchise, I would guess that anything to do with the Spider-Verse is going to have its moment in the sun once Beyond the Spider-Verse is released in 2027. Those increases will likely reflect the characters from Baldur's Gate 3 spike and subsequent decrease of inventory for Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate

With that in mind, Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Spider-Punk will be the topic of conversation in 2027. Out of these three, I have Spider-Punk as the most reasonable card to increase, as I see the utility and playability in Standard to be nearly guaranteed, given the current resurgence of Red Deck Wins. Perhaps a one-for-one replacement for Sunspine Lynx?

Extra! Extra!

In one out of every 24 Play Boosters, as well as every Collector Booster, there’s a Source Material card using the classic artwork from Marvel Comics. There are 40 cards altogether, with a good spread of reprints and alternative arts for certain legends.

There are many cards included here that strike my fancy. First and foremost, I appreciate that more reprints are always a good thing. Venom, King in Black (Borderless), and Spider-Gwen, Web-Warrior are the standout legends included with a neat reprint that will help curb their ever-increasing prices.

Among the spells included, a few cards stand out above the others: Reanimate (Borderless), Terminate, Beast Within (Borderless), and Path to Exile (Borderless). This lists static and powerful spells that we’ve seen played over the years, now with a fresh layer of paint. Currently, the price on several of these pieces is a touch high since they will only be available 100% in Collector Boosters. Within the next few months, the prices will delve into a more manageable range, so I’d recommend waiting to pick up copies three-plus weeks after the set releases.

Earth-2026

Universes Beyond is set to be a key part of Magic: The Gathering going forward. Whether long-term players like it or not, it’s proven commercially successful, providing greater incentive to continuously pump out collaborations.

Personally, I'll be tired of all of these sets by this time next year. Perhaps by 2026, the number of new players for the game will make up for alienating many long-term players. Currently, my own stance is to invest elsewhere, as I don’t believe these cards will have enough long-term value.

Join me again next time as we take a breather before the Fire Nation attacks.
