Hidden Gems for Hearthhull, the Worldseed

Edge of Eternities marks the beginning of Commander’s space age. Admittedly, it feels a bit odd that an unmanned space station can be the head of an army, while a planeswalker can’t, but we’re not gonna think too hard about that.

After all, this is a game where it’s possible to counter a Soulless One with Remove Soul. You can also equip boots to a snake and give Spongebob Squarepants the One Ring. If it doesn’t make sense, just wave your hands and sing, “Magic.”

Today, we dive into Jund lands. Hearthhull, the Worldseed is a new face commander for an Edge of Eternities precon and has already proven quite popular. But, as always, there are so many card options available, that finding the best, most fun, most interesting, or most unique inclusions is no simple task.

Here are my five picks for cards you might want to consider for your Hearthhull 99.

#1. Scorched Ruins

Ah, Weatherlight. Nowadays, we’re spoiled with the likes of Lotus Field that have hexproof. Back in the day, we sacrificed two untapped lands and we liked it! But this little baby taps for four colorless mana. Four! And we didn’t want those untapped lands anyway.

It’s an interesting way to trigger your commander, fill your graveyard, and ramp colorless mana. Plus, with friends like Deserted Temple, your mana pool overfloweth.

You can also run creatures that untap lands for extra ramp. See also: Lotus Vale.

#2. Lazotep Quarry

While you’re building the land package for your deck, take a gander at Deserts. There are a number of playable ones and Lazotep Quarry was only available in a Commander deck, so you might not readily find it hiding out in your collection.

But it can generate loads of value as it pseudo-reanimates your creatures. See also: Scavenger Grounds for repeatable graveyard removal.

Take that, pesky graveyard decks!

#3. Evolution Sage

I don’t often include uncommons on this list, but today I’ll be making several exceptions. Hearthhull wants counters and lands. Evolution Sage turns lands into more counters. It seems like a match made in heaven.

Granted, including this card will steer you in a specific direction for the whole deck. Load up on cards that care about counters and ways to proliferate and this little Elf can do a whole lot of work.

If you’re lucky, you can play this out on turn three. Turn four, play your commander. Tap the Sage to station, then use Hearththrull’s ability to sacrifice a land and hopefully play two more. Proliferate twice, more if they’re fetchlands. On turn four, with just these two nonland cards, your commander will be almost all the way crewed.

Sounds like a party!

#4. Dionus, Elvish Archdruid

Granted, Dionus wants you to play lots of Elves. Hey, look, Evolution Sage is an Elf!

And it would proliferate counters from Dionus. Creatures with summoning sickness can station right away. By himself, Dionus adds seven counters in one turn. He makes your mana dork Elves better. He gets bigger and bigger.

I think an interesting route to go with this deck is go with Elves and lands… in space!

#5. House Cartographer

It’s no accident that the survival mechanic from Duskmourn: House of Horror plays so well with station from Edge of Eternities. They’re begging to be played together.

I almost picked Kona, Rescue Beastie as my last suggestion, which is valid, but House Cartographer always finds a land, and that sounds like too much synergy to ignore. Seriously, it’s practically drawing a card every turn and fuelling all the other synergies that are bound to be in the deck.

Sure, Kona can cheat out something big, but is that what we’re doing? No. We’re mapping a house. A really big house, that’s haunted/a demon. And there’s a space station above it. Uh… *waves hands* Magic.
