Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Nova Hellkite $3.23 (+121%)

This Dragon from Edge of Eternities has been soaring this week after doing well in Standard. Nova Hellkite wasn't worth that much when the set came out, while Vivi dominated the format. The five-mana Dragon with flying and haste seemed reasonable, dealing one damage when it enters and having the possibility to be warped in and come back later. However, it hadn't really caught the eye of the players yet.

The reason for the spike is clear. Nova Hellkite was played in the winning deck of a large Standard event. Brennan Roy's Mono-Red Aggro list took down the Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation at SCG CON Orlando, running three copies in the main deck and another in the sideboard. And besides that, Marco Cammilluzzi's top 8 deck even had a full playset, with more decks playing it in the top 16.

And while we're discussing these decks, lets look at another card high up on the Interests list this week. Razorkin Needlehead was also played in these red lists with a full playset.

Nova Hellkite went from about a dollar to over three dollars, and with Red Deck Wins proving to be a deck that can beat Vivi it will probably remain popular. Unless the metagame shifts dramatically or Wizards makes some major changes, I expect Nova Hellkite to maintain its status as a Standard staple.

#2 Haliya, Guided by Light $4.03 (+109%)

This legendary Human Soldier from Edge of Eternities has been quietly gaining traction and went up this week. What started as just another lifegain creature has become a solid card in multiple formats. And frankly, I'm not surprised this card would go up. Only a few short weeks ago we talked about the spike of The Gaffer, who is similar to Haliya.

Something to note on Haliya, Guided by Light is that her lifegain ability doesn't just trigger for creatures, but also for artifacts. Treasure tokens, Food tokens, and other artifact strategies suddenly make her more appealing. Getting life from both creatures and artifacts makes it easier to reach that three-life threshold to draw a card. Warp makes sure she can hit the battlefield early for a draw and can be replayed again later.

And while Commander players realized she was a good quite early, it seems to be that the price spike now comes from Modern Boros and Azorius Energy decks. She works well with Ocelot Pride. The deck also plays Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury which can trigger Haliya on its own. Energy is one of the most popular Modern decks at the moment, so if they start playing Haliya it's not suprising that the price is going up.

#3 Boon Reflection $29.45 (+55%)

Sometimes the most obivous cards end up being the winners when new commanders are printed. Boon Reflection, originally printed in Shadowmoor, hasn't been cheap for a long time. But the price has significantly gone up this past week. This enchantment doubles any life you gain, and that becomes very powerful in the right deck.

One of the newer commanders that cares about lifegain is Hope Estheim, who we also talked about a few weeks ago with the spike of Beacon of Immortality. Hope wants to gain life so you can mill your opponents. And by doubling that life gain, Hope becomes a lot better. Boon Reflection makes even small lifegain cards into more of a threat, making it a good inclusion for players building around these strategies. While the Shadowmoor version has gone up the most, the print from Double Masters is still a bit cheaper, but also on the move.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
