Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Terra Eternal $10.07 (+907%)

This enchantment from Worldwake has exploded this week, and if you've been following the Avatar: The Last Airbender previews, you may know why. Terra Eternal makes all lands indestructible for three mana, which sounds pretty niche and doesn't necessarily come up a lot. The reason for this spike is because of a card we discussed last week as well  when Lotus Cobra spiked. Toph, the First Metalbender turns all your nontoken artifacts into lands, meaning Terra Eternal gives all your artifacts indestructible, which is a Darksteel Forge effect for a lot less mana (and money, at least, for now).

Toph, the First Metalbender (Showcase)

Toph is becoming a popular commander, and isn't even released yet. What's interesting is that while the average sales price has shot up, the market price is still lagging behind, meaning you may be able to get your copy cheaper still. Whether this price holds depends on how popular Toph actually becomes once the full Avatar set releases. While Terra Eternal seems cool with Toph, it also has anti-synergy with the earthbending ability, which brings back destroyed lands.

Being from Worldwake with no reprints since, means supply is limited, so even a little demand could keep prices high for some time.

#2 Need for Speed $10.00 (+150%)

Let's move to an older card released in 2001 in Odyssey. This enchantment has some very specific synergies that people are just starting to discover. Need for Speed gives a creature haste by sacrificing a land, which sounds like a pretty terrible strategy.

The reason for the spike is the World Shaper precon from Edge of Eternities. Hearthhull, the Worldseed, the precon's commander, makes each opponent lose two life for each land you sacrifice. Since Need for Speed has a repeatable effect, you can sacrifice all the lands you wants. When you add Szarel, Genesis Shepherd, you can play those sacrificed lands back from your graveyard.

What's really driving demand is the combination of scarcity and increased demand. Being a rare from Odyssey means copies are hard to find, and it doesn't take much buying activity to move the market. The card has gone from around two dollars to ten. While the effect is still pretty niche outside of these strategies, the low supply means prices could stay high for now.

That all said, we also still have cards like Zuran Orb with a repeatable sacrifice effect, but even in the cheapest version from Modern Horizons 2 we see significant movement:

#3 Winged Hive Tyrant $2.98 (+68%)

Not really the biggest spike, but an interesting card to touch upon because I haven't really seen cards move yet for this reason. It's time to dive into Universes Beyond again, and we can even do it twice! Because Winged Hive Tyrant is a Tyranid creature from Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000 that gives creatures with counters on them flying and haste. And frankly, I was surprised the card was this cheap to begin with, since it seems really good in any kind of creature-based counter strategies.

And to continue with the second Universes Beyond reference, the reason for the spike seems to be Sonic the Hedgehog. This creature was released in the Sonic: Friend & Foes drop on July 14th. And while that was over a month ago, the supply is now getting into people's hands, though in Europe it hasn't even shipped yet. This means that players are just starting to get their decks together and looking for cards in the 99. The synergy between Sonic and Winged Hive Tyrant seems pretty clear. Sonic can put +1/+1 counters on creatures with haste, like Winged Hive Tyrant itself. But the Tyranid makes sure even creatures without haste can get haste if we manage to put a counter on it. In a creature counter-based deck, that shouldn't really be much of a problem.

It remains to be seen if Winged Hive Tyrant is good enough for a spot in the deck. The brewing has just begun, but since it's a Tyranid creature it's bound to the Warhammer 40k lore and thus harder to reprint (yet not impossible). The Warhammer cards definitely have a limited supply with no additional copies entering soon as far as we're aware. This will definitely drive the price up a bit, but $3 also isn't an insane amount for a card.

If you consider building this deck or are interested in the Sonic secret lair drops, make sure you read Matt's Cards To Watch in the Sonic Secret Lair.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Brallin, Skyshark Rider $4.10 - Moving up!

Brallin, Skyshark Rider has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Ensnaring Bridge (Future Sight) $7.48 - Stabilizing

Oko, Thief of Crowns $5.75 - Moving down
