Another week where the Lobster Chef is spiking a card. But the Avatar previews are also having their effect.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll tell you about the Magic: the Gathering cards that'll be the talk of the town tonight! Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Discord.

Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Scrapheap $9.94 (+237%)

Scrapheap from Urza's Legacy shot up. For three mana, this artifact gives you a life whenever an artifact or enchantment hits your graveyard. The card has been sitting under the radar for over two decades, but it seems like people have found a suitable home for it.

The reason for the spike is the new Food-matters commander that we've been seeing more in Weekly Winners lately. Ragost, Deft Gastronaut wants to sacrifice Food tokens constantly to deal damage, but needs life gain to untap and keep the engine running. Scrapheap provides exactly that. In a four-player game, this combo can deal upwards of twelve damage per turn cycle to each opponent, which is strong when it gets going.

Being from Urza's Legacy means supply is naturally limited, and near-mint copies are becoming especially scarce. The card went from under a dollar to almost ten dollars. Ragost proves to be one of the more popular commanders recently printed. All hail our Lobster overlord!

#2 Soulstone Sanctuary $6.03 (+110%)

This unique land from Foundations has been moving up this week, and if you've been watching the current Standard metagame, you can see why. For four mana, Soulstone Sanctuary becomes a 3/3 creature with vigilance and all creature types permanently. Unlike most creature lands that revert back at end of turn, once you activate Sanctuary's ability, it stays a creature.

The reason for the spike is how perfectly this slots into the current Standard format after rotation shook things up. With the format settling after rotation and the bans it seems that having a land that doubles as a threat gives decks a better late-game. It's seeing play in everything from midrange strategies to control decks that want an extra win condition that doesn't take up a slot.

But what's also driving the spike is the typal applications in Commander. Having all creature types means Soulstone Sanctuary slots into virtually any deck revolving around a certain creature type. With the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender having an Ally theme we see another creature type getting some love.

#3 Lotus Cobra $9.73 (+81%)

This green creature originally printed in Zendikar has been climbing steadily this week, and the reason is crystal clear if you've been following the Avatar: The Last Airbender previews. Lotus Cobra provides a mana of any color whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, which has always been a powerful effect in Landfall strategies. The card saw plenty of play during its time in Standard and has remained a Commander staple ever since.

Toph, the First Metalbender (Showcase)

The reason for the spike is Toph, the First Metalbender, who's shaping up to be one of the most popular commanders from the upcoming Avatar set. Toph turns all your nontoken artifacts into lands, meaning every cheap artifact you play triggers Lotus Cobra for additional mana. Suddenly, playing a zero-mana artifact like Lotus Petal generates extra mana while also triggering other landfall triggers. We're also seeing movement in other landfall cards like Springheart Nantuko for the same reason.

Lotus Cobra along with Toph creates some really explosive turns. With enough cheap artifacts and ways to bounce them, you can generate massive amounts of mana while triggering landfall repeatedly in a single turn. Don't expect this trend to slow down until players either find the combo too inconsistent or Toph gets overshadowed by other Avatar commanders when the full set releases.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Clarion Conqueror $3.60 - Moving up!

Clarion Conqueror has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Dragonlord Dromoka $2.95 - Moving up

Dracogenesis $7.60 - Moving down
