With Edge of Eternities released the brewing can commence! But shockingly, only one of our winners is because of space.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll tell you about the Magic: the Gathering cards that'll be the talk of the town tonight! Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Discord.

Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Jwari Shapeshifter $7.67 (+667%)

This forgotten copy creature from Worldwake has been quietly sitting in bulk boxes for over a decade, but recent Avatar: The Last Airbender spoilers have changed everything. For just two mana you get a Shapeshifter that can copy any Ally on the battlefield. While the ability seems pretty specific at first, being able to duplicate powerful Allies like Sea Gate Loremaster or Harabaz Druid can provide serious value.

Katara, the Fearless

The card's spike makes sense when you realize how copy effects work in typal strategies. With cards like Mirror Box or Maskwood Nexus you can turn off the legend rule or make everything an Ally, giving the Shapeshifter more things to copy. Since the spoiling of Avatar Aang, we knew that it would have the Ally creature type. But the newly revealed Katara, the Fearless confirmed that Allies are getting actual support again.

Whether Jwari Shapeshifter remains expensive depends on what else gets revealed in the Avatar set and whether we see reprints in potential Commander precons. The card has only been reprinted once via The List, which doesn't really add a lot to the supply. If Avatar gives the Ally support that players are hoping for and dodges a reprint, this Shapeshifter could stay quite expensive. But with months to go until release, there's plenty of time for things to change.

And when we look at the Interests of last week, we see more Allies appear on there, like the aformentioned Sea Gate Loremaster, and we also see Kabira Evangel on there.

#2 Astrid Peth $7.99 (+529%)

This Human from Universes Beyond: Doctor Who has been jumping up this week. The card creates Food tokens and lets you explore whenever you sacrifice Clues or Food, which might not seem like much at first. But when you pair her with the right sacrifice outlets, Astrid can quickly become a real threat while keeping your engine running.

It spiked because of Ragost, Deft Gastronaut from Edge of Eternities, and the synergy between these two is chef's kiss. Ragost turns all your artifacts into Foods and wants to sacrifice them constantly for damage, while Astrid rewards you for doing exactly that by growing bigger and making even more Food tokens. Since Boros doesn't have a ton of Food-specific support, players are digging to find cards that work well with Ragost, and Astrid fits perfectly into what it's trying to do.

Since Ragost was previewed it immediately has gotten a cult-following. People love the Lobster Chef and it actually packs some interesting abilities. People will want to build around it and will want to include Astrid.

#3 Beacon of Immortality $31.00 (+70%)

This classic instant from Fifth Dawn has been shooting up, and it's not hard to see why. For six mana you get to double your life total, which sounds expensive until you realize what that means in a format where you start at 40 life. Like all "Beacon of"s, it shuffles itself back into your library after, so you can't abuse it from the graveyard. But in the right shell that one-time effect can be absolutely devastating.

The recent price movement makes perfect sense when you look at Hope Estheim from the Final Fantasy set, where gaining lots of life means that you get to mill your opponents out. Doubling your life total from 40 to 80 means Hope mills each opponent for 40 cards at your end step, which already is a huge chunk of their decks. But what's really pushing this card over the edge is the new Space-Time Anomaly from Edge of Eternities, which lets you mill someone for your entire life total. Between Hope's triggered ability and having Anomaly, Beacon of Immortality has gone up to new heights.

The card wasn't that cheap to begin with. It started around $5 before Final Fintasy, then went up to around $8, but now really has taken off into space.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Shattered Sanctum $4.56 - Moving up!

Shattered Sanctum has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Craterhoof Behemoth $12.38 - Moving down

Deadpool, Trading Card $15.86 - Moving down
