Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Spike Cannibal $9.94 (+1888%)

This old-school hate piece from Exodus has been making waves lately, and it's not hard to see why. While you're getting a measly 1/1 for three mana on the surface, Spike Cannibal becomes a real threat when your opponents are running +1/+1 counter strategies. The card lets you move all +1/+1 counters from all creatures onto itself, which can turn this simple Beast into a serious problem while simultaneously disrupting your opponent's game plan.

The recent spike seems tied to the Counter Blitz precon from Commander: Final Fantasy, where +1/+1 counters are everywhere and this card can absolutely wreck the deck's strategy. Since Counters Matter remains one of the most popular themes in Commander, Spike Cannibal has plenty of targets to choose from in most pods. Even decks that aren't solely running counter strategies often run creatures with +1/+1 counters, making this Beast relevant in more games than you might expect.

The card hasn't seen a reprint since its original Exodus printing, so supply has been limited for this nearly 30 year old card. Whether this price movement has staying power remains to be seen. But with counter-based strategies showing no signs of slowing down and the Final Fantasy precons maintaining their popularity, this Spike might have found its moment to shine in the current meta.

Spike Cannibal

#2 The Gaffer $12.55 (+289%)

This unassuming Halfling from Commander: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth has been quietly climbing in price, and lifegain enthusiasts are starting to notice it. For just three mana you get a decent 2/3 body, but the real value comes from that end step trigger that turns your lifegain into card advantage. Since you only need to gain three life in a turn to draw that extra card, it's not exactly hard in most lifegain decks.

It seems like what pushed The Gaffer into the public eye is a Lobster! It synergizes with the newly revealed Ragost, Deft Gastronaut from Edge of Eternities. Ragost turns all your artifacts into Foods and can deal damage while gaining you life, making it incredibly easy to hit that three-life threshold consistently. With lifegain being one of the most popular casual Commander strategies and The Gaffer providing the card draw that these decks often struggle with, this Halfling has found a home. Yet, I am a little surprised it wasn't more expensive to begin with. Even before Ragost, it seems like The Gaffer provides valuable and meaningful card draw within these strategies.

#3 Shelob, Child of Ungoliant $14.99 (+88%)

Don't accuse me of clickbaiting yet! We're talking solely about the Showcase Scrolls variant here! But this Shelob variant is moving up quickly. While the regular version has stayed stable, the showcase treatment is catching attention from collectors and Spider enthusiasts. The card itself is already a powerhouse commander that can function very well, turning any creature into Food tokens after your Spiders deal damage to them. With an 8/8 deathtouch body and ward protection, Shelob demands answers while providing incredible value.

The recent buzz stems from speculation around the upcoming Spider-Man set, where multiple Spider-themed creatures are expected to be printed. If this upcoming set provides extra support, Shelob could become a go-to commander for the archetype, if she isn't already, and the showcase variant's limited print run makes it an attractive target for both players and speculators.

#4 Wave Goodbye (Extended Art) $14.29 (+9%)

This blue sorcery from Commander: The Lost Caverns of Ixalan has been making... waves, and it's not hard to see why counter-based strategies love this card. For four mana you get what's essentially a one-sided board wipe in the right deck, bouncing every creature that doesn't have a +1/+1 counter back to hand while leaving your buffed-up threats untouched. The effect is devastating when timed correctly, clearing away opposing boards while maintaining your own presence and tempo advantage.

The card found new life with Tidus, Yuna's Guardian, where +1/+1 counters are everywhere and Wave Goodbye becomes an incredibly efficient removal spell, and potentially a game winning spell. Since it originally appeared in the Explorers of the Deep precon, supply has always been somewhat limited compared to cards from main sets. Counter strategies remain popular in Commander, and Wave Goodbye fits perfectly into any deck that wants to put counters on its creatures.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar $3.31 - Moving up!

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet $5.42 - Moving down

Kozilek, the Broken Reality $5.83 - Moving down
