Cards To Use With the New Warp Mechanic From Edge of Eternities

Warp Speed Ahead

Edge of Eternities releases in less than two short weeks, and while the temptation to write about Station is strong, the one thing that has me the most intrigued about the set has to be the new mechanic Warp.

By paying an alternate, lower Warp cost, you may cast any spell with this effect from your hand and gain its upsides for a turn, before it goes into exile, where you may cast it on a later turn. As someone whoโ€™s always trying to find ways to get certain win conditions in Commander online faster, this seems like an incredibly strong ability thatโ€™s sure to, pardon the pun, warp certain games around it.

Are you in mono-black trying to win by sacrificing creatures or artifacts, but donโ€™t have the mana for a Zulaport Cutthroat, let alone a Mirkwood Bats? Well look no further than Susurian Voidborn, who will get you to that win for just one black. Need to double up on tokens but still have mana to take actions after the fact? Doubling Season and Anointed Procession are no good here, at least compared to Exalted Sunborn

These are but two of the many examples of the inherent power behind the Warp mechanic, and as such, I think itโ€™s a good idea to look at some older cards that, if you choose to make a Warp-centric deck (perhaps around Tannuk, Steadfast Second or someone similar) could fit right at home.

Charred Foyer // Warped Space

The first and most prominent pick that comes to mind, especially if you happen to be running Tannuk at the helm, would have to be Charred Foyer // Warped Space.

This enchantment from Duskmourn: House of Horror provides you with a decent draw engine on the Charred Foyer side, especially if youโ€™re in mono-red, but the most important part of this card lies in Warped Space, which will allow you to cast any one thing youโ€™ve warped or exiled for a whopping zero mana.

Yes the enchantment costs six to put out, but if youโ€™re using Tannuk to warp stuff like Blightsteel Colossus into play, then this is actually incredibly cost effective and should be a non-issue. The fact that itโ€™s a two-for-one on a single card is another solid bonus, and I really think this has legs beyond its current $0.75 market price. Supply is fairly high, given it's from a somewhat recent set, but if everyoneโ€™s going to be rushing to cast spells from exile in Commander then itโ€™s worth the pickup before it eventually creeps higher.

Hell, foil borderless versions only go for $2.50, and those look beautiful. Both price and utility-wise, one could do far worse in mono-red, and it even fits right at home in other decks, such as Prosper, Tome-Bound.

Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival

Speaking of commanders that take advantage of Warp effects, next up we have Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival, an underrated legendary Human Artificer from March of the Machine: The Aftermath that I rarely see played, but whose time may have come to shine.

Pia Nalaar rewards you for playing lands or casting spells from exile, which, given such new potential staples like Astelli Reclaimer and Exalted Sunborn, we are more and more likely to see in Commander. Exalted Sunborn in particular synergizes with Pia Nalaar, giving you two 1/1 Thopters with haste while both cards coexist on the battlefield, but really any effect that gets you playing stuff from exile is going to help you build an intimidating army of flyers.

Think of Pia Nalaar as a cheaper Talrand, Sky Summoner in Boros colors, just one that hasnโ€™t been printed sixteen times and is slightly harder to kill. She also only costs two mana, making for a great, consistent turn-two play if sheโ€™s at the helm, or an easy early-game drop if sheโ€™s in the ninety-nine.

Available supply on the market for her is, like the previous card, quite highโ€ฆ except for the halo foil masterpiece-style version, which goes for around $4. Weโ€™ve seen these premium variants, like Kolaghan Warmonger, shoot up before, so itโ€™s not unrealistic to think the most desirable version of Pia Nalaar might move the same way, though admittedly itโ€™s hard to compete with the demand that Dragons bring to the table. Still, whether youโ€™re picking up a fancier version or just the base one for a quarter, Pia Nalaar should be considered if you find yourself desiring to go warp speed any time soon.

Wild-Magic Sorcerer

While weโ€™re still hanging around in red, which seems to be especially Warp-heavy, itโ€™s also worth mentioning Wild-Magic Sorcerer from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and Commander: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms as a must-include for any decks in the color based around this mechanic.

For four mana you give your first spell cast from exile each turn cascade, a classically powerful effect that should help establish your board state in no time. A 4/3 isnโ€™t necessarily the best body for four mana in 2025, but if played early enough while everyone is establishing their own boards it could drastically help propel you to the head of the pack.

Itโ€™s also worth mentioning that this doesnโ€™t just happen during your turn, but each turn, so if you have anything that allows you to cast spells from exile on your opponentsโ€™ turns this would trigger then as well. All in all not bad, and while this one has already jumped a bit in price since the $0.50 it was sitting at for three or so years, I think it has room to grow (especially if weโ€™re leaning more and more into casting spells from exile) from its current $5.50 price point.

And of course, I would be remiss if I didnโ€™t mention that these D&D cards, while not impossible to reprint, often evade such reprints due to the implicit nature of cross-overs. This means if you want one of these and think they might go up, nowโ€™s the time to get it.

Mirror of Life Trapping

Lastly is a bit of a weirder mention that may not have fully reached its potential quite yet, but one worth shouting out with all the exile shenanigans weโ€™re suddenly seeing, and itโ€™s also from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate - thatโ€™s Mirror of Life Trapping.

While its execution is more obtuse than the more straightforward cards previously mentioned, thereโ€™s something to be said about a card that plays around with zones so much in such a unique way. It takes some finagling, but this could help you keep cards that are meant to only last a single turn on the battlefield for an indefinite period, and if you double up on Warp effects with someone like Tannuk, you can get stuff like the previously mentioned Blightsteel Colossus on the field permanently that much faster.

The Mirror is also a bit of a stax piece too that de-incentivizes your opponents from playing creature spells until they know they can see them fully hit the board. This one isnโ€™t really a โ€œbuy it nowโ€ recommendation, more a โ€œkeep an eye on this oneโ€ recommendation; I do believe this cardโ€™s time will come, and we are inching ever closer to that moment.

And for just a quarter thereโ€™s no reason not to add a copy or two to pad out your next online order or trade, right?

In Conclusion

There are more Warp recommendations I could throw out there (Extraordinary Journey and Nalfeshnee come to mind), but these are the ones I think have the potential to see the most play or have the highest impact on Commander. Time will tell how strong of a mechanic Warp truly is, but I do believe it has immense potential, and I already know of a few cards I will be replacing in decks for โ€œWarp versionsโ€ that do the same thing for a reduced cost, albeit for one turn.

Still, when all you need is that one turn to get there, and youโ€™re able to Warp something in for a drastically lower cost, thatโ€™s really all you are looking for, and in that sense Warp is one for the books.
