Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Searing Touch $5.75 (+1073%)

This instant from Tempest has dramatically jumped this past week. For nearly three decades, Searing Touch has been largely overlooked as a one-mana spell that deals just one damage, with a buyback cost that seems steep. But players have suddenly realized this old burn spell has potential when combined with the right cost reduction effects, particularly with the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set coming in November.

The card's recent spike is tied to Aang, Master of Elements, the transformed side of Avatar Aang that was recently previewed and we also discussed last week. Aang's ability to reduce costs by one mana of each color effectively makes Searing Touch free to cast with buyback, creating an infinite damage combo that can end games on the spot. The reason that this combo works is the following rule:

118.7b If a cost is reduced by an amount of colored or colorless mana, but the cost doesn’t require mana of that type, the cost is reduced by that amount of generic mana.

However, while we know what the text is of Avatar Aang and that we have to flip it for the cost reduction, we still don't actually know how hard it will be to flip it. Wizards hasn't explained yet what the different types of bending are. That means that we not only need four different colors of mana to cast it, we also may have to jump through a lot of hoops to flip to the Master of Elements to pull off this combo.

#2 Lazotep Sliver $18.75 (+688%)

This Sliver from Commander Masters has been shooting up over the past days, jumping from under two dollars to much higher prices. While Lazotep Sliver gives all your Slivers afflict and lets you amass Army tokens whenever Slivers deal combat damage, it seemed like a niche inclusion when it was first printed. The hype started when on July 1st, Maro posted his Edge of Eternities teaser mentioning a "card that grants an ability to Slivers." But with the official reveal of Thrumming Hivepool, players are picking up copies of previously overlooked cards.

Sliver Gravemother

As you could have guessed, we are mainly taking Lazotep Sliver as the hook to talk about the prices of Slivers in general. Because it's mainly the average price that has gone up this much. While the market price is moving up as well, it seems to sell at the moment around $6. In the past week we've also seen other popular Sliver commanders move up in price, like Sliver Hivelord and Sliver Gravemother. And while very minor, the chart of good old Sliver Queen is also shaking a bit.

#3 Zask, Skittering Swarmlord $24.99 (+324%)

This Insect legend from Jumpstart 2022 has been buzzing as new commander precon World Shaper was revealed. While Zask wasn't exactly a bulk rare before the spike, the card's synergy with the precon's land-sacrifice theme has caught players' attention. The ability to play lands and Insects from your graveyard pairs perfectly with a deck that wants to sacrifice lands for value, and being able to replay those lands means you can keep going. Under Hearthhull, the Worldseed's command Zask may fly!

Hearthhull, the Worldseed

What makes this spike particularly notable is just how scarce Zask has become on the market. Being printed only in Jumpstart 2022 means supply was already limited, and the recent increase in demand has led to an almost complete buyout. With only a handful of listings remaining and prices jumping, it seems like players are realizing that this Insect lord could be one of the best upgrades for the precon.

When cards are only printed in a Jumpstart set, the price can be driven up rather easily. For example, Allosaurus Shepherd used to be a $200 card for a brief period of time. Although it dwindled back to $60, when the extra supply from the Double Masters 2022 reprint came in it finally settled. Another expensive card from a Jumpstart set is Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm, which is about $50. Simply having some popularity and no reprints drives the price up a lot.

#4 Filigree Vector $18.85 (+324%)

Lets add a last-minute winner with Filigree Vector. This artifact creature from Commander: March of the Machine can put some +1/+1 and charge counters on other artifacts. The decklists for the Commander: Edge of Eternities have been revealed, which you can find here. This Construct could have been a good reprint for the Counter Intelligence precon, but since it's not in there, the price has shot up.

Darksteel Reactor

People have been quickly snagging up copies of this card as an easy upgrade to the deck. The deck revolves around charge counters a lot, with powerful reprints like Darksteel Reactor and Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus. But there are more cards that could have been reprinted in the precon that are now moving since they're not in there. Power Conduit for example has also jumped 10% since yesterday.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Shattered Sanctum $4.57 - Moving up!

Shattered Sanctum has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Emrakul, the World Anew $7.78 - Slowly moving down

Teferi, Hero of Dominaria (White Border) $4.52 - Moving down
