Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Gogo, Mysterious Mime $14.87 (+399%)

This red legend from Commander: Final Fantasy spiked this week. Unlike traditional clone effects, which enter as copies of other creatures, Gogo becomes a copy of another creature you control at the beginning of each combat, while keeping its own name. This unique ability lets you copy your own commander without running into the legend rule, opening up powerful synergies that other clone effects simply can't provide.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The card shines in decks built around commanders with strong triggered abilities, since you can effectively double up on those effects each turn.  We see Gogo being played in Magda, Brazen Outlaw decks, for example, to generate extra Treasure tokens. We also see it appearing in early builds around Sonic the Hedgehog. The forced attack clause might seem like a drawback, but the power boost both creatures receive often makes up for it.

With players realizing how versatile this creature can be across different strategies, demand has been steadily increasing and driving the recent price movement.

#2 Lulu, Stern Guardian $2.17 (+256%)

Another card from Commander: Final Fantasy drastically went up this week. While Lulu might not look like the most powerful card at first glance, her ability to put stun counters on attacking creatures may create a barrier for players to attack you, especially in the early game when players are looking for the easiest targets to attack.

Kilo, Apogee Mind

What makes Lulu particularly appealing is her versatility in counter strategies. The proliferate is good in counter strategies, especially since you can sink your mana into it if needed. With the recently previewed card Kilo, Apogee Mind from the upcoming set Commander: Edge of Eternities, we can see that more support for proliferate abilities is coming. Besides that, we also know that cards from the Spider-Man set care about stun counters. We've seen it on Sensational Spider-Man, for example.

The timing of her spike suggests players are already preparing for these future synergies, making her a solid pickup for anyone interested in counter-based strategies.

#3 Fist of Suns $12.44 (+256%)

This artifact, originally printed in Fifth Dawn, has almost doubled in price almost overnight. While Fist of Suns has been a casual Commander staple for years, especially in five-color decks with commanders like Morophon, the Boundless and Jodah, Archmage Eternal, this recent spike seems to be driven around a card we won't see until November. The culprit appears to be Aang, Master of Elements from the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set.

Aang, Master of Elements

With both Fist of Suns and Aang, Master of Elements on the battlefield you basically have an Omniscience-like effect where all your spells become free, since you can pay the alternative cost of five different colors instead of any mana cost. You know, the card that was so much fun in Standard that Wizards had to take the deck down a peg.

It remains to be seen how good this combination will actually be, since we don't know exactly how the "bending" mechanic will work or how easy it will be to transform Avatar Aang into his Master of Elements form, the potential for this interaction has caught players' attention. With Avatar still months away from release, this spike might be driven more by speculation than actual demand.

#4 Ornithopter $3.39 (+105%)

After this many weeks, I can no longer ignore it. It's time to discuss the Thopter in the room! For over a month now I've seen Ornithopter pop up in the Interests, but as it only seems to revolve around the 10th Edition version I figured it would just be a fluke. Looking at the average price chart we see some weird movement, but the market price (as in the chart above) does illustrate an upward trend. And so do other prints, especially older ones.

And since I figured it wasn't a real trend, I never really looked into it. Ornithopter, while a unique and iconic creature, has been reprinted so many times and is so cheap that I didn't give it a second thought - until I accidentally stumbled upon something that may explain what's going on here. A new trend is emerging in Cube land, called the "100 Ornithopters Cube".

As the name suggests, it's a normal Cube with a twist. The only creatures in it are 100 copies of Ornithopter. No creature tokens, no creature lands, and no ways to deal damage to your opponent except by using Ornithopter. An example decklist can be found here.

But with many people trying to get 100 copies of a single card, you can imagine it does something to the market, even though the card is considered bulk. There are plenty of copies, but this absolutely is slowly starting to show.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Rebuff the Wicked $4.90 - Moving up!

Rebuff the Wicked has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Dauthi Voidwalker $5.60 - Slowly moving up

Thoughtseize $6.14 - Moving down
