Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Jaws of Defeat $4.00 (+335%)

This enchantment from Commander: Tarkir: Dragonstorm has been climbing steadily over the past few weeks. While it initially seemed like a card for toughness-matters decks, like Felothar the Steadfast or Betor, Kin to All, a new combo was found that can deal nearly ten thousand damage to an opponent. But before we can call it a combo, we obviously need another card.

When you cast a creature and immediately target it with Overkill, Jaws of Defeat still triggers based on the creature's last known toughness before it died, meaning you'll deal up to 9998 damage to an opponent. The combo works because Jaws of Defeat checks the creature's toughness at the moment it left the battlefield, not when the ability resolves. While it only kills one opponent and requires specific pieces, being able to take someone out in Commander has definitely caught players' attention and driven up demand for this enchantment.

#2 Savor the Moment $14.69 (+84%)

Players who enjoy taking extra turns have probably been savoring the spike of Savor the Moment. For just three mana, this blue sorcery from Shadowmoor gives you an additional turn, but has a downside: you skip your untap step. So now you get an extra turn, but no mana to spend.

Fortunately, Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy gave us Vivi Ornitier, and suddenly people are realizing how perfectly these two cards work together. Vivi's ability to generate massive amounts of mana doesn't require tapping. However, it has that pesky "once per turn" restriction. But when you're getting an extra turn with Savor the Moment, you can still get that mana out of Vivi.

If you've been reading the Weekly Winners series often, you may have noticed that people are trying multiple things to get around Vivi's restriction. A few weeks ago we discussed the spike of Quicksilver Elemental that can go infinite with Vivi. And while we're talking about Vivi, let's also mention Harmonic Prodigy, which has been showing up on the Interests this week.

This creature doubles triggered abilities of Wizards and Shamans you control. Can we think of a popular new Wizard? While Harmonic Prodigy doesn't do anything with Vivi's mana-generating ability, it does work for his triggered ability that adds counters whenever you cast noncreature spells.

#3 Primaris Eliminator $4.28 (+118%)

Lets look at this Astartes Warrior from Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000 that has the ability to either Infest creatures of target player or simply destroy target creature. For five mana that doesn't seem like a great deal, but obviously in the right decks it can be a plus. We see this Warhammer creature show up in 'Henzie decks that wants creatures of mana value four or greater.

But this time it seems like Terra, Herald of Hope is the reason for the card moving up. Terra mills two cards every turn and whenever she deals combat damage, you can return a creature with power three or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. Being able to return Primaris Eliminator is worthwhile and if it dies later we can perhaps get it back again.

And even with this interaction it doesn't seem to be an auto-include in Terra decks. But cards from the Warhammer sets, especially the ones bound to the Warhammer universe, are hard to reprint for Wizards. That means that the supply is not very likely to increase any time soon, so even a little demand will make the price move.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

The Gitrog Monster $4.93 - Moving up!

The Gitrog Monster has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.
