Equipment Cards to Pick Up Before Final Fantasy

Equip-lash

Welcome back for another History, Restapled, a Commander-focused column that attempts to validate a newer card’s status as a staple by looking at how cards that are similar, synergistic, or competing have fared in the past financially.

The new Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy set arrives in a few weeks, and with it a slew of new commanders who care about Equipment. Between Cloud, Midgar Mercenary, Firion, Wild Rose Warrior, Barret, Avalanche Leader and Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER, you best believe these artifact weapons will be in high demand. Here are a few Equipment cards from Magic’s past that are worth grabbing for those decks, or in case demand creeps up:

Pre-War Formalwear - $1.50

Here we have what is essentially a Sevinne's Reclamation attached to an Equipment card that provides one of the best keyword abilities in Commander. Used simply as a reanimation spell, Pre-War Formalwear is hard to beat. But the card can pull some weight in Equipment-only mode, as the power-toughness buff it provides is decent, especially on a smaller mana value creature.

It’s hard to know how prices will fare for a Universes Beyond card like this. Wizards of the Coast has very clearly planted its flag in the UB camp as far as printing new cards, but reprints are yet to be determined. I’d imagine we’ll eventually see some sort of UB Masters-type set, in which case Pre-War Formalwear may make another appearance. But it’s not something anyone can count on.

STATUS: White Equipment staple

Tarrian's Soulcleaver - $2

With Blade of the Bloodchief sitting at $5, Tarrian’s Soulcleaver is not only a superior gameplay alternative, but a budget one as well. The card outclasses Bloodchief in just about every way, triggering off both artifacts and creatures without the mostly irrelevant Vampire clause, and providing vigilance, to boot. Frankly, I’m surprised it’s not at least the same price as Bloodchief, if not higher.

All I can say is…get on the hype train before it fully leaves the station. This card rules — and, not for nothing, it’s an all-star in my Grismold, the Dreadsower deck.

STATUS: Aristocrats Equipment staple

Lost Jitte - $3

While marginally not as useful as its “found” sibling Umezawa's Jitte, Lost Jitte is nevertheless a solid piece of Equipment with a variety of uses, especially in non-green decks. Its ability to equip cheaply and untap a land is a variation of a ramp spell that, at least, refunds the mana you spent to equip. Or, use it to slip past a pesky blocker — or many, if you save up charge counters for a few turns.

The card was printed in Outlaws of Thunder Junction: The Big Score, so its availability is slightly limited for the moment. Best to get one now and hold onto it in case of a price spike.

STATUS: Secondary Equipment staple

Lion Sash - $1.50

It’s unclear whether Wizards will be printing new living Equipment cards in the near future. The concept was pretty fun, so I certainly hope so, but it does feel like something they may want to keep unique to the plane of Kamigawa.

Lion Sash is one of the better ones for its affordable mana value and ability to mimic Scavenging Ooze and the instant-speed shenanigans it enables, all at a low Reconfigure cost. Plus, it’s a creature that’s fetchable off a Stoneforge Mystic or the new Cloud, Midgar Mercenary. Decks need to start running more graveyard hate; and when they do, Lion Sash will become an automatic staple.

STATUS: Equipment staple in the making

Nettlecyst - $0.75

No matter the Equipment-based deck, Nettlecyst remains an auto-include. It can easily jack up any creature or run on its own as a Living Weapon, and holds implications in Enchantress decks, as well. The fact that it remains less than $1 is a miracle. Don’t hesitate any longer!

STATUS: Even more of an Equipment staple
