Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Nethroi, Apex of Death $4.59 (+79%)

This Nightmare Beast from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths is prowling up the charts this week. After being bulk at a little over $1, copies have now pounced to over $4. Nethroi has only been moving down since its release in 2020. The past few weeks we've been talking about a certain reason for cards to spike, and this week is no different. Felothar the Steadfast strikes again!

Nethroi's mutate ability lets you return creatures with total power ten or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. That might not sound impressive at first, but pair it with Felothar's defender strategy and things get wild. Most creatures in the deck will have defender, which often means a power of zero. When you mutate Nethroi onto any non-human creature, which includes most walls, you can essentially bring back your entire graveyard. Having such insurance against board wipes is pretty good!

#2 Into the Flood Maw $4.16 (+74%)

This uncommon from Bloomburrow has doubled in price since Tarkir: Dragonstorm came out last month. The card definitely had bulk status at its release, until September 2024 when it started moving up quickly. Into the Flood Maw costs a to bounce an opponent's creature back to hand, but you can promise your opponent a tapped 1/1 Fish token as a "Gift," which upgrades your bounce to any nonland permanent.

This instant has found its way into multiple formats. It's played in Modern, Legacy, and Vintage, but is mostly found in sideboards with one or two copies per deck. But while being included in these formats definitely helps, the main spike seems to come from the new Izzet Prowess deck that's been dominating Standard. The deck runs cheap creatures with prowess alongside Cori-Steel Cutter. Into the Flood Maw fits perfectly in this deck since it can remove big blockers that you can't burn, or gets rid of other problematic permanents.

#3 Shiko, Paragon of the Way $8.32 (+35%)

This Jeskai Dragon is flying high in the markets this week. After bottoming out at just under $2 a month ago, Shiko, Paragon of the Way has been on a steady climb upward. The reason for the spike seems to be because of Casey Miller who won the Standard Regional Championship at SCG Minneapolis and played four copies of Shiko.

Shiko comes with an enters ability that lets you exile and copy any nonland card with mana value three or less from your graveyard and cast it for free. A 4/5 beater already is a decent control finisher, but getting a free Stock Up or Lightning Helix is some good value.

But Standard isn't the only format where Shiko is popular. Commander players have discovered Shiko as well. Pair him with cards like Felidar Guardian, Displacer Kitten, or Soulherder and you've got a pretty serious value engine. Some players are even using Preston, the Vanisher and Dualcaster Mage to create infinite loops.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Bontu's Monument $3.72 - Moving up!

Bontu's Monument has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Chalice of the Void $22.00 - Moving down

Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim (Borderless) $4.42 - Moving down
