Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Helm of the Ghastlord $9.52 (+534%)

You know all is well when a common card, that isn't on the Reserved List, spikes by this much and costs you almost $10. Helm of the Ghastlord was printed in Shadowmoor, which was released in May 2008. It's an Aura that pumps blue and/or black creatures, but also can draw you cards or let your opponent discard cards when it deals damage, dependant on the color(s) of the enchanted creature.

But if you know Commander, you understand that this card will be played in decks that are built around, at least, black and blue. We tend to see the card in decks around Nekusar, the Mindrazer and Niv-Mizzet, Guildpact. But when we look at the number of decks it's actually played in, it doesn't seem like an overly popular card.

Y'shtola, Night's Blessed

The card spiked because of a new commander previewed in the upcoming Commander: Final Fantasy. That card is Y'shtola, Night's Blessed. She does two damage to each opponent for each noncreature spell you cast with mana value three or greater. Often Auras like Helm of the Ghastlord specifically mention "combat damage," but in this case it triggers for "damage." You can see how an enchanted Y'shtola, Night's Blessed with Helm of the Ghastlord can spiral out of control.

#2 Marang River Regent $3.22 (+132%)

This blue Dragon may have been a little bit overlooked during the release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm. Ror six mana you gets to return up to two nonland permanents to their owners' hands. But it also can be cast for its "Coil and Catch" part, which you can use to draw three and discard one at instant speed.

Especially that last part to draw cards at instant speed is a big one. For control decks it means they get to keep their mana open during their opponent's turn, and if the opponent didn't do anything worth responding to, you get to utilize the card advantage.

Marang River Regent has found its way into Standard Jeskai Control, Azorius Control, and Azorius Omniscience. And while the card draw is a big factor, don't forget it never hurts to have a big Dragon that you can protect with your control spells.

#3 Orim's Chant $8.70 (+53%)

Ah, good-old Orim's Chant. So much fun to play this card in your opponent's upkeep and "timewalking" them (sort of). And if you could spare an additional you were also sure they couldn't attack. You can imagine that especially in one-vs-one formats this card works best.

While the card used to see play in Legacy, often in combo decks, it fell out of favor for Silence. While Chant is more versatile in terms of the kicker, Silence doesn't target and could play through a Leyline of Sanctity, for instance.

The card seems to be making a comeback and is played in Modern UW Control decks and sideboards in decks like Boros Energy and Ruby Storm. We also see the Chant being played alongside Isochron Scepter which can completely try to lock the opponent out of the game by activating the Scepter in every opponent's upkeep.

Modern is the main reason for the spike of the Modern Horizons 3 print, but we're also seeing a big spike in the Planeshift version. While some Modern players also prefer to have the original, this print is also popular because of Premodern.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Temporary Lockdown $4.57 - Moving up!

Temporary Lockdown has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Liliana Vess $5.98 - Slowly moving down

The Wandering Emperor $6.52 - Slowly moving down
