Cards have spiked because of Dragons, Commander appeal, and even people speculating on the upcoming B&R announcement.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll tell you about the Magic: the Gathering cards that'll be the talk of the town tonight! Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Discord.

Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm $15.99 (+214%)

When we've talked about Miirym before, it was always because of a different winner, even though it has appeared on the Interests before. But there's no hiding from her anymore, because this week Miirym shot up. The reason for the spike is, of course, the upcoming Tarkir: Dragonstorm set.

It may be no surprise that this set is full of Dragons and Dragon support. Last week we talked about Miirym when Tiamat went up because Dracogenesis was previewed. And also this week we can find Tiamat high up on the Interests list.

There's plenty of reasons for Miirym to move up, but the big spike this week seems to come from a new Dragon that was previewed: Ureni of the Unwritten. Imagine having Miirym in play and then casting Ureni, making a token of it and putting two more Dragons onto the battlefield because of the triggers.

#2 Deathrite Shaman $9.99 (+104%)

I remember playing Deathrite Shaman in Legacy when it was released. Or well... playing against it actually. Since I'm an avid Reanimator player this card was the bane of my existence. People called Shaman a creature planeswalker, since it could do it all; in formats where fetchlands are everywhere especially, you're always pretty certain that you can use it as mana generator. But you could also just keep your mana open for reactive spells, and if they weren't needed you could then use one of the Shaman's other abilities to drain your opponent or gain life. Or... you know... remove the fatty from my graveyard 😭.

However, it was banned from Legacy in July 2018. And years before that, in February 2014, it was also banned from Modern. In both instances it was due to the card being too strong in all stages of the game. It rarely seemed to be a dead draw.

As you may, or may not, know. This Monday there will be a B&R announcement. And as is tradition, the week before the announcement we generally see an uptick in Splinter Twin and Stoneforge Mystic. But both have already been unbanned in Modern now, so people have moved on to different targets. In this case people are speculating on Deathrite Shaman to be unbanned next Monday. What are your thoughts?

#3 Tree of Perdition $13.97 (+247%)

I find this spike pretty funny, because it only seems to be around the Innistrad Remastered printing. Last week the card was selling below $5, but it's shot up to $14, merely catching up to its other two printings that have been around $10 for some time now.

Back in July we talked about this card since it spiked due to the Pioneer format where players tried to get it into their graveyard to exile it with Agatha's Soul Cauldron and grant the ability to a creature with a low toughness. We also had Ezio Auditore da Firenze, which wants your opponents to have a low life total. To be fair, we usually need our opponents at a low life total to win.

So what's making this specific printing catch up with its other prints? Felothar the Steadfast was previewed in the Commander: Tarkir: Dragonstorm set. Felothar lets you assign combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power and it also lets creatures with defender attack. It has an activated ability as well where you get to sacrifice a creature and draw cards equal to its toughness and then discard cards equal to its power. That means you use Tree of Perdition to swing for 13 damage, and then sacrifice it for 13 cards. We can even make it more gross: instead of attacking, how about we just exchange life totals with an opponent who may be at 30 life and then draw 30 cards while putting your opponent on 13 life?

While we already had decks with similar strategies with Doran, the Siege Tower and Arcades, the Strategist, it seems like Felothar may be the better commander here.

#4 Seton, Krosan Protector $8.99 (+247%)

Let's do an extra Winner as a shoutout from last week. While Seton itself didn't spike last week, we did mention it because of the spike of Gilt-Leaf Archdruid, a card that's bound to make you some new friends when you steal all their lands. The spike was because of Teval, the Balanced Scale, which can make you Druid tokens, which in turn you can use to activate Gilt-Leaf Archdruid.

Before Teval, Gilt-Leaf Archdruid didn't see much play, but we did mention Seton, Krosan Protector since that's mainly the Commander it saw play with. With Teval and cards like Teval's Judgment the Druid type is getting some new cards to include. Seton is a great way to provide ramp for the deck with some potential to combo with cards like Gravecrawler or Withered Wretch with a sacrifice outlet.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Panharmonicon $3.62 - Moving up!

Panharmonicon has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Anzrag, the Quake-Mole (Showcase) $2.49 - Slowly moving up

Liliana of the Veil (Borderless) $10.01 - Moving down
