Overlooked Bloomburrow Cards for Commander

Bloomin’ Onion

Welcome back for another History, Restapled, a Commander-focused column that attempts to validate a newer card’s status as a staple by looking at how cards that are similar, synergistic, or competing have fared in the past financially.

This month, we’ll peel back more layers of Bloomburrow to uncover more potential Commander staples at affordable prices. They’re all quite cute, too.

Scavenger's Talent - $1

Caretaker's Talent, Stormchaser's Talent, and Innkeeper's Talent get a lot of love, but Scavenger’s Talent holds a lot of potential, even outside Food synergy. The card is essentially Deathgreeter with a repeatable mill source (more than once a turn, too) built in, ideally for self-mill, while also offering significant payoff for all those creature cards in your graveyard.

Plus, it can come down on turn one and start accumulating value right away. This one’s a gem whose potential hasn’t yet been achieved.

STATUS: Black Aristocrats staple

Keen-Eyed Curator - $0.75

Graveyard hate is often underrepresented in Commander because people assume it’s only effective against dedicated graveyard strategies, which simply isn’t the case. Plenty of cards exist that contain Flashback, Threshold, or incidental recursion, like Mystic Sanctuary, to unlock the usefulness of cards that go after graveyards, like Scavenging Ooze

Keen-Eyed Curator is a significant upgrade to Scooze because it adds trample, requires only colorless mana to activate, and comes down as a 3/3 for two mana, which is a decent enough body to dissuade opponents from getting in some early attacks.

Try running one as, essentially, a six mana 7/7 trampler, and enjoy threatening to exile someone’s great Reanimate target.

STATUS: Possible green removal staple

Season of the Burrow - $2.50

Five mana for five creature tokens is a better rate than Secure the Wastes, and Season’s ability to exile two things mitigates the sting of the resulting card draw (unless you use it on your own Food token, of course). The fact that the card tacks on an Indestructible counter to its recursion means this Season is one to love.

Once you’ve got a Tocasia's Welcome or Welcoming Vampire out, Season of the Burrow really shines.

STATUS: Possible white staple

Warren Warleader - $2.50

Six mana for two lesser Adeline, Resplendent Cathars is already decent, but Warren Warleader and its offspring offer added flexibility to pump token armies once you’ve already flooded the board. The card really starts popping off once Mondrak, Glory Dominus or Anointed Procession hits the field.

This deserves a spot as a token staple alongside Adeline.
