Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Dockside Extortionist $72.45 (+393%)

Well, this is interesting. Three days ago Wizards of the Coast has unveiled "Commander Brackets," a new beta matchmaking system for Commander that divides decks into five distinct power brackets and introduces a 40-card Game Changers list. Game Changers are powerful Commander cards that warp games providing overwhelming advantages. The system categorizes decks from ultra-casual to competitive.

But the most interesting thing in the article is that the word "unban" occurs eight times. And now we've hit the nail on the head for why this card moved up.

But let's take a step back first on why we see this card so high up on the Interests list, while there are plenty of other cards that are banned in Commander that aren't moving up this drastically. End of September we added an extra segment in our Weekly Winners called Losers of the Week that talked about Dockside Extortionist, Jeweled Lotus, and Mana Crypt being bannd in the Commander format. These bans led to a lot of ruckus in the community and eventually the disbanding of the Rules Committee, turning over the power of the format to Wizards.

This is the first real big official act of Wizards of the Coast with the newly given control of the format. And now that Wizards is mentioning the word "unban" people think that because of all the commotion around the bans these three cards will likely be the first to come off the banned list. Dockside Extortionist is not the only card spiking this week; we see Jeweled Lotus high up on the Interests as well.

Frankly, and this is my opinion, I don't see Wizards unbanning these cards. Arguably, the Rules Committee knew the format better than Wizards, and they decided to ban these cards for good reason. If Wizards now decides, this short after the ban, to unban them again, it doesn't really reflect well on them and the respect they had for the committee.

#2 Drinker of Sorrow $8.99 (+442%)

A card I didn't exactly expect to come up on the Interests is Drinker of Sorrow. This is a Horror creature rare from Legions that cannot block and makes you sack permanents when it deals combat damage. That's quite the drawback, but with five power for three mana it does hit like a truck. But even then, with powercreep happening all the time, those stats aren't that amazing. In Aetherdrift we just got Kalakscion, Hunger Tyrant which is a 7/2 for three mana in black, or Rotting Regisaur. I'm sure you can find other creatures for the same mana value that fit the bill.

But there are formats where powercreep doesn't happen, since new cards aren't introduced into the format. One of these is the community-created format Premodern which consists of cards from the sets Fourth Edition to Scourge in the old frame that have been Standard legal at some point. New cards will not enter this pool, and thus cards aren't outclassed. But because the format mainly consists of older cards, with a lower supply, prices are more easily manipulated - especially when these cards are on the Reserved List. (Just to be clear, Drinker of Sorrow isn't on the Reserved List.)

It seems that in Premodern the above BG Aggro deck is doing really well lately. If you have sufficient permanents to sacrifice by using cards like Sarcomancy you can keep attacking for a bunch of life every turn. This enchantment from Tempest is on the Reserved List and is also seeing an uptick this past week.

#3 Diregraf Colossus $14.24 (+131%)

You may not have gotten the memo, but Zombies are hot at the moment.  Two weeks ago we already discussed several when Varina, Lich Queen spiked. That wasn't really surprising with the Eternal Might precon being fully previewed, with Temmet, Naktamun's Will and Hashaton, Scarab's Fist as the commander. We also see Ketramose, the New Dawn appearing (eventhough it's not a Zombie). They work really well in a graveyard strategy that many Zombie cards also profit from.

Diregraf Colossus seems like a great upgrade to the Eternal Might precon and has notibly gotten some extra attention because it's included as a Bonus card in the Festival in a Box Chicago 2025 bundle. And if this all wasn't enough, Zombies also recently got a new commander in Zul Ashur, Lich Lord from Foundations, and obviously Zombies are a theme in the Innistrad Remastered set. Make sure you read Adam's article Hidden Gems for Hashaton, Scarab's Fist if this is the deck of your choice.

And speaking of Zombies, we also see specifically the Foundations printing of Death Baron high up on the Interests list this week. That said, it seems like it's mainly the average listing price shooting up with the market price still lagging behind. But when we compare this to other printings, we do see a noticable uptrend on the price.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Mossborn Hydra $4.90 - Moving up!

Mossborn Hydra has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Final Showdown $5.77 - Moving down

Ygra, Eater of All $11.02 - Slowly moving down
