More Commander Staples From Foundations

Power Comes Cheap

Welcome back for another History, Restapled, a Commander-focused column that attempts to validate a newer card’s status as a staple by looking at how cards that are similar, synergistic, or competing have fared in the past financially.

Welcome to 2025! Now that Foundations has found its footing, it’s time to take a look at a few potential future-staples that this new set has gifted us all. I’m excited to see what players can do with ‘em.

Leyline Axe

While unable to be used as a combat trick, I find Leyline Axe to share many similarities to Embercleave, an $8 mythic rare from Throne of Eldraine. Both cards hold the potential to reduce their mana costs while providing two of the most relevant keywords to any Voltron deck. Chances aren’t very high that Leyline Axe ends up on the battlefield for free, but even if it doesn’t, the card’s floor is still relatively high and can turn the tide late in the game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this card started appearing in Voltron lists that already run Embercleave and things like Hammer of Nazahn and The Reaver Cleaver - though unlike those two cards, this one is colorless and slots into everything.

It’s a steal at $2 and only going to rise as it continues permeating the format.

STATUS: New Voltron Equipment staple

High Fae Trickster

Vedalken Orrery was a $45 card for longer than it should have been (it’s now $7), which goes to show that players will pay a premium to enable flash in their decks, even if the card shares few synergies with the rest of the 98.

A few new cards have taken up the flash mantle, and while they all have their places, none could compete with the colorless nature of Vedalken Orrery or Winding Canyons ($25).

High Fae Trickster is the best of the rest we’ve received so far due to having flash itself and unlocking the ability to take a wild turn of your own at the end of someone else’s turn with less of a chance to be interrupted. The card also makes a hell of an attacker in a pinch. Well worth $2.

STATUS: New blue flash go-to

Pol Jamaar, Illusionist (Anime)

This $2 card from Foundations Jumpstart shares a lot of DNA with Titan of Littjara, itself a $6 card. I’d imagine decks that want one probably want the other as well, so it’s worth grabbing a few Illusionists now while Jumpstart is still being printed.

Cards like this typically spike once they’re out of rotation and generally hold value regardless - just look at something like Rodolf Duskbringer: objectively not a great card but holding at $3, down from double digits, even after a recent reprinting.

Kindred decks: get ready to draw cards!

STATUS: New Kindred staple

Pol Jamaar, Illusionist (Anime)

Fumulus, the Infestation (Anime)

I don’t think this card needs any other Insects, Leeches, Slugs, or Worms to make it good. The tokens it produces arrive even if an opponent sacrifices a creature, and the tokens join itself in triggering the card’s second ability.

$2 is a small price to pay to upgrade any mono-black or Golgari deck with an Aristocrats piece that grows by itself.

STATUS: Potential Aristocrats powerhouse

Fumulus, the Infestation (Anime)

Jump Shot

What do you all think of Foundations Jumpstart? Any cards you’re dying to pick up? I’d love to know!
