Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Neyith of the Dire Hunt $12.97 (+198%)

Neyith of the Dire Hunt has seen quite the price spike this past week. This rare was printed in Jumpstart, has never been reprinted since, and has always been a bit under the radar. The recent surge is all thanks to the synergy with Wolverine, Best There Is. Neyith's ability to draw cards whenever a creature you control fights or becomes blocked pairs incredibly well with Wolverine, who doubles all the damage he deals and loves getting into combat. With a limited supply of Jumpstart cards out there, it's no surprise Neyith's price has taken off.

Wolverine's bound to be the commander of some aggresive decks and isn't just pushing Neyith's price. Cards like Xenagos, God of Revels also seem to be slowly moving up for instance that can also double a creature's power and toughness. And while Ulvenwald Tracker's price is always a bit up-and-down lately it does seem to be rebounding up again. If you want to play this deck, perhaps this is a good time to pick up a copy before others do. Another card that fits the same category that spiked this week is Thickest in the Thicket, which jumped from $1.50 to $5.50.

Another card that definitely may have helped in Neyith's popularity is the printing of Slinza, the Spiked Stampede in the Foundations Jumpstart set. Slinza offers a way to let your creatures fight with your opponent's creatures and combined with Neyith offers consistent card draw.

Neyith of the Dire Hunt
Wolverine, Best There Is
Xenagos, God of Revels
Thickest in the Thicket
Slinza, the Spiked Stampede

#2 Tempt with Bunnies $6.34 (+106%)

An interesting card to spike this week is Tempt with Bunnies. This three-mana sorcery lets you draw a card and creature a 1/1 Rabbit, and will give all your opponents the choice to do the same. If they do, you get to draw another card and make another critter for each of them who does. At worst, this is a draw and make a creature, but you probably hope your opponents can't resist drawing a card themselves.

The reason for the spike is kinda hard to pinpoint. Not too long ago the card could be bought for less than $2, and that may just have been too low to begin with, making this an underestimated card. Obviously, when you offer your opponents value, you want to profit extra from it. That's why you'd see this card show up in decks around Kambal, Profiteering Mayor, for instance. A more plausible reason may be that Hare Apparent was previewed in the upcoming Foundations set. This 2/2 Rabbit makes more 1/1 white Rabbits, but more importantly, there can be as many copies as you want in your deck. Drawing more cards, and thus more Hare Apparents, can get you a big army quickly.

Of course Tempt with Bunnies would be a logical inclusion in all Rabbit typal decks, and there are plenty of new commanders around that creature type in Bloomburrow. Speaking of Bloomburrow, keep in mind that this set is already becoming "old news." New sets are coming out, and people will stop opening these Bloomburrow packs, adding fewer cards to the supply. When we look around other cards from Bloomburrow you can notice an uptrend for more of them, probably for this reason. Supply is drying up, moving up the prices.

Tempt with Bunnies
Kambal, Profiteering Mayor
Hare Apparent

#3 Hivis of the Scale $5.69 (+102%)

We haven't talked about Hivis of the Scale for a while! The last time we spoke about it was in July 2022 when it jumped up to about $20 right before the Double Masters 2022 release which had several Dragon reprints, and people may have been anticipating a surge in the type's popularity. I kinda feel that this time it's not really that different. In just one week from now the Foundations set will be released and in it we'll find several Dragon reprints, as well as some new Dragons like Niv-Mizzet, Visionary and Twinflame Tyrant.

But it's not only Foundations that may lead to a surge in play for Dragons. We also know that we'll be returning to Tarkir in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set that'll release in April 2025. Not much is known about the set yet, but that plane can mean mostly one thing: more Dragons and support. This could indeed potentially lead to people having a renewed interest in Dragons and you could play Hivis of the Scale as a counter card. It remains to be seen if that's actually a good move, but since it's on the Reserved List the needle is easy to move on the price.

Hivis of the Scale
Niv-Mizzet, Visionary
Twinflame Tyrant

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Lotus Cobra has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.
