Hidden Gems for Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls

Happy Spooky Season, everyone! Duskmourn: House of Horror is here just in time to celebrate, and Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls is here to throw a party. The Harrower of Souls leads its own Commander precon deck, which has proven to be quite popular in recent weeks among EDHREC builders. The base of the deck is well-founded already, building off of cards that do damage to each player during their own upkeep, a la Sulfuric Vortex.

But where do we go from here? How can we build off of this base? There are several routes and here are my top five picks for (casual) Commander cards that might inspire you to take a more personal direction.

1. Uncivil Unrest

Valgavoth loves himself some +1/+1 counters and can build up quite the swole body in one simple round. No steroids needed! And he doesnโ€™t skip wing day. If you play a damage-every-turn card by turn three, Valgavoth on turn four, and Uncivil Unrest on turn five, you could swing into someone for 16 flying damage on olโ€™ Valgyโ€™s first attack. There are plenty of other cards that care about counters, so it might be time for you to get uncivil.

2. Obsidian Fireheart

Though this choice is a little more mana intensive than others, itโ€™s also more permanent. Every board has to come up with plans to recover from a board wipe and Obsidian Fireheart fits right into that plan. Assuming you can set a land from each opponent ablaze, then you will never have to worry about finding a damage-dealing card every time you need to recast your Commander. The land continues to burn, baby! See also, Chandra, Awakened Inferno.

3. The Red Terror

Presumably, your deck will be stuffed with cards that deal damage to opponents. They wonโ€™t be spells that deal damage in one fell swoop, instead opting to slowly tick down their life total for a death of a thousand cuts. We can take advantage of so many instances of damage with our pal, The Red Terror, and his less attractive brother, War Elemental. Just like Papa Valgy, these bad boys grow up so fast.

4. Chandra's Incinerator

While so many cards are dedicated to throwing damage at your opponentsโ€™ heads, thereโ€™s less room for cards that deal with troublesome creatures and planeswalkers. This is where Chandraโ€™s Incinerator comes in. This little hottie will turn all that incidental player damage into removal, at no extra cost! You might even get it on the board early if you manage to activate its cost reduction.

5. Stuffy Doll

A lot of lists already include Brash Taunter, but donโ€™t overlook this snuggly companion. Play it wisely, picking whoever is the biggest threat in order to play into the gameโ€™s politics. It serves as a great blocker, extra damage, and a way to trigger Valgavoth off of at least one opponent. While I donโ€™t know for sure if itโ€™s true, legends say that Valgavoth sleeps with a Stuffy Doll at night. Play one for yourself and youโ€™ll quickly see why.
