Weekly Winners 2021 - 26

We are still not done with the Modern Horizons 2 meta shifting in Modern! We see a lot of movement while the meta is slowly adjusting and settling. Even though spoilers for Adventures in the Forgotten Realms have started, we do not see a lot of movement because of it yet. This is however expected to get going in the upcoming week.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

MTGStocks update

As many of you are aware, we have added Sealed product to the website, where you can see all products together or you can look at a set page and view the "Sealed" tab to only see sealed products for this particular set. This week we rolled out an update to this, so you are also able to add Sealed products to your inventory to keep track of its price more easily.

#1 Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep $47.99 (+399%)

Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep

Not entirely sure what to think of this spike. Let's begin by analysing the card a bit and talk about it. Shinka is a Legendary land from a cycle in Champions of Kamigawa. All Legendary lands in this cycle have an ability to grant an extra ability to a Legendary creature. This one in particular can give a first strike to one. The observant reader among you have probably already noticed the word "Legendary" being used a lot in the previous sentences. What format revolves a lot about these types of creatures? Exactly! Commander!

The entire cycle has always been somewhat popular in Commander decks, and especially since they do not enter the battlefield tapped, there's barely any reason to not run them in your decks.

However, this definitely is not the full story! Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep sees play in Modern in Rakdos Midrange decks, and especially the ones playing Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer. They seem to be performing pretty well. Also notice that this deck plays another Legendary land from this same cycle: Shizo, Death's Storehouse (up by +78% to $32).

Champions of Kamigawa is an old set, with a relatively low supply. It's a card easily manipulated and especially when everyone is trying to get a copy to play with. Now the card isn't definitely worth $48 at this time, since the market price is still around $10. I expect the card to go to around $20. Check your bulk-rares box!

#2 Crime // Punishment $9.99 (+784%)

Crime // Punishment

People who follow the current Modern meta a bit, have noticed a bunch of shifts since Modern Horizons 2 came out. Several archetypes have gotten a lot better, and there are even several new archetypes. This usually asks for changes in existing archetypes to deal with these decks that have gotten more prominent. So certain decks may choose to slightly alter the amount of lands or counterspells they play, for instance. But the most common way to deal with a changing meta is change your sideboard to be able to beat these decks more consistently in games 2 and 3.

This last example is what we see with Crime // Punishment, a split spell from Dissension. When you cast it, you may choose which side you want to cast. We see this card show up once or twice in sideboards of decks that can reliably cast it. Because of its flexibility it can really be a powerhouse against certain decks. If you cast Punishment for = 1, you can clear (most of) the board of Prowess decks. You can also clear up an Urza board. With Crime you can grab a Feasting Troll King out of your opponent's graveyard.

Because of this versatility and its power against the current Modern meta, you see more people trying to get their hands on copies.

While we are discussing the new Modern meta and sideboards, this may be a good time to also address other cards that have gone up because they are being played in Modern sideboards because of the shifting meta. One prime example is Kataki, War's Wage that we see show up in Orzhov and Spirits decks sideboards. It went up between 151% and 284%, depending on the print. For decks that do not run white, but do run red, we see a price spike in Shattering Spree that went up between 271% and 313% to deal with the current meta. Especially this last card, I do not see this price point hold.

#3 Parallel Evolution $26.09 (+178%)

Parallel Evolution

A card going up because of commander, and to be more precise, mainly for Chatterfang, Squirrel General decks. The card plays really nicely with Epic Struggle which we also see on this week's Interests lists, going up 100% to $19.98. Unfortunately there is not a lot more to tell about this card.

#4 Blackcleave Cliffs and Darkslick Shores

Blackcleave Cliffs

Two lands going up that were printed in Scars of Mirrodin, without any noticeable reprint. Obviously there are the Zendikar Rising Expeditions prints, but it remains to be seen how much that adds to the total supply, and also are more expensive anyway because of their premium status. With the Modern meta shifting it is not uncommon for lands to go up, since people are trying to build their new favorite deck and are brewing with it. Lands are simply a necessity in any* deck, and will move more quickly because of that.

Blackcleave Cliffs is showing up in Jund and Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar decks, where we see Darkslick Shores being played in Urza's Kitchen decks.

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
