Weekly Winners (46)

The finance market is in calm waters this week. No big changes, no earth shattering spikes. But the good news is: it allows us to look at the more subtle changes. Also, don't forget to check out our fetch land update, an added extra to this week's article. Once again, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Protean Hulk +22.4% ($2.84)

Protean Hulk

The Modern Bubble Hulk deck has been around for some time now. Surely, not a top tier deck, but a ton of fun to play. Since not everyone in the Modern format is sticking to the top tier lists, we can see other decks pop up every now and again. This week, Justin Maguire piloted his Hulk deck to a top 16 in a Modern open. When a deck like this nets such a result, there it always draws attention and coverage to itself.

It should be no surprise that the key card of the deck is Protean Hulk. For a good primer on the deck, check out this article by Modern Nexus.

Protean Hulk sees fringe play in Legacy as well. But in a format with Force of Will, such a deck has a lot less of a chance of success.

#2 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon +20.8% ($38.00)

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is an increasingly popular card in Standard and Modern. And on top of that, it also sees play in Legacy. This week, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon's price topped it's previous all time high. It is really no surprise that Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is now at $38. It fits the profile almost perfectly;

  • It is a mythic rare
  • It's a planeswalker
  • It has a unique ability (or abilities)
  • It sees play in Standard
  • It sees play in Modern
  • It sees play in Legacy
  • It has great flavor
  • It has cool art

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon's price can go higher. Especially when decks running it will do better in Modern and especially, Legacy. The MUD deck that runs it is not a top tier deck, nor is there any reason to believe it will be in the coming months or years. But, who knows what Wizards decides to print that has great synergy with Ugin, the Spirit Dragon? It could happen, but it probably won't. Therefore, expect the price of Ugin, the Spirit Dragon to settle around the $40-$45 mark. At least until it rotates out of standard.

#3 Brushland +20.1% ($2.45)

Brushland

Every once in a while, a crazy buyout happens. Obviously, once in a while was this week. Brushland spiked after what can only be a buyout. At the time of writing, there are no copies of Ninth Edition Brushland available. And please don't let us (or Wizards) fool you, this printing of Brushland is white bordered.

What makes this a crazy buyout is simple to understand: Brushland was printed in 5 other sets over the years. Buying out one of the least popular printings of the card is not going to turn to profit. If a player or collector really needs that Brushland, he can simply buy it in it's 8th edition printing. Or, when he has good taste, buy it black bordered.

Why this card was bought out, I simply don't know. There is no reason to suspect that it is a demand driven price correction, or a sudden increase in popularity.

But, maybe I'm wrong. I just might have missed some coverage on how great 9E Brushland is in some new Modern brew. Or maybe there is a new format (like 93/94 or Tiny Leaders), where the only usable land that produces G/W is 9E Brushland. Or maybe supply just dried up, not because of a buyout, but simply because 9E Brushland was suddenly very much more wanted. If so, please let me know.

Fetch land update

For those of you who have not noticed yet: KTK fetchland is steadily growing in value. Most of them have (more than) doubled in value, compared to their low point in March 2015. For your convenience, here some combined graphs.

The differences between the Onslaught and KTK printings are also interesting to take a look at:

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
