Weekly Winners (37)

Since Peter is out for the weekend in German wine country, I am going to try to take a swing at writing this week's Weekly Winners. A slow week in Magic finance. It is spoiler season again and the recent spoilers do have their effect on card prices already. Soonce again, we present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Sedge Sliver +207,3%

Sedge Sliver

While Sedge Sliver is already falling back, it shortly spiked to $15.00 this week because of the SCG Modern Open Cincinnati results. A Sliver deck, by Adam Bowman, reached top 8 with this decklist and running 3 Sedge Slivers mainboard.

Even though Sedge Sliver already went down to $8.39, it still means a price increase of over 200% since last week, making it our first weekly winner. The foil version of this card went from $7 to $39, and doesn’t seem to be experiencing the same drop, but rather remaining steady.

The expectation of this card is that it will come down some more. Probably not going back to its original price, but I would avoid this card at the moment, since it’s definitely a buyout. If not, we would also see a huge increase in the prices of other slivers being played in Adam’s deck.

#2 Jwari Shapeshifter +41,3%

Jwari Shapeshifter

Jwari Shapeshifter also was the #2 weekly winner of last week’s Weekly Winners, but it’s still slowly rising. I’m going to repeat what Peter said last week. The Battle for Zendikar spoilers are slowly rolling out, and we see a lot of new allies showing up. Some speculators thought it would be wise to buy out ally cards they deem good enough to become interesting for the eternal formats.

Anything can happen to this (and other allies cards). If we do get (very) powerful new allies in BFZ, $3 might be cheap for a card like this. But if the allies prove to be disappointing, the $3 value can never hold. Place your bets please.

#3 Hardened Scales +29,7%

Hardened Scales

Hardened Scales is slowly seeing some real price increases over the past weeks and seems to be climbing faster and faster. People are speculating it’s due to the recently spoiled Undergrowth Champion and the Magic Origins card Managorger Hydra. Some people seem to think this makes for a viable Standard strategy.

Also, the confirmation that Sylvan Scrying will be reprinted in Battle for Zendikar seems to be supporting this hypothesis.

#4 Sliver Hive +18,4%

Sliver Hive

Sliver Hive is slowly ticking up. Of course this also has everything to do with Adam Bowman’s Sliver deck, discussed above. Slivers have always been a casual all-star favorite, and this card is an auto include as 4-off in each and every one of them. I just can’t see this card staying at $3.60.

There's a lot going on around Modern, and each of our winners at least mention the format. But there are two winners that seem to be directly linked to it.
