Weekly Winners 2018 - 47

It's been quite a slow week in my opinion. Not a lot of cards have moved because of real reasons in my opinion. This week the article is a bit later than usual, because both Peter and I have been busy with personal stuff and work. So please accept our somewhat shorter Weekly Winners. But, as usual, just in time for FNM!

#1 Thing in the Ice $12.42 (+63.42%)

Thing in the Ice

Our friendly blue flip card shot up to over $13 this week, and shockingly, this isn't the all time high. When Shadows over Innistrad was preselling, Thing in the Ice went for over $17, reaching an all time low of $3 and now up again. So let's try to grasp why this has happened.

Decks like "Suicide Blue", before the Gitaxian Probe banning, already played TiTI. Nowadays we see it in Blue Moon decks more and more often, but we mainly see the card being played in Red Spells decks since the printing of Arclight Phoenix. This has really renewed interest in Thing in the Ice, causing the new spike. It even sees play in Past in Flames storm decks as sideboard card.

This demand is moving the price upward quickly, without a reprint on the near horizon. Flip cards are also quite popular for kitchen table games. We also can't forget the effects on price memory, where people view this as an expensive card because it has been selling for much higher prices than it was.

#2 Chancellor of the Tangle (FOIL) $12.00 (+618.56%)

Chancellor of the Tangle

Time to find your bulk rare box! Try to find your foil versions of Chancellor of the Tangle. I'm actually a bit surprised this card hasn't really moved for the normal printing. It has slowly been creeping up, but still far below the $1 mark. The foil version however has shot up by over 600%.

The reason why this happened is not really surprising, since it has been making some waves in Modern Goblin Prison decks and was also used in a Saffron Olive brew with Goblin Charbelcher. The card will give you an extra mana on your first main phase, which you can use to do super fun things (with a land as well) like casting Chalice of the Void on 1 during the first turn. If that doesn't sound like super exciting for both you and your opponent, you can also combine Chancellor of the Tangle with Simian Spirit Guide to crank out a Blood Moon on Turn 1.

#3 Wave of Reckoning $3.57 (+155%)

Wave of Reckoning

When I saw that Wave of Reckoning went up, my first thought was "must be Commander driven". I couldn't really find any chatter about the card, but I can imagine this card works really well in Doran, the Siege Tower and Arcades, the Strategist decks. And it's easy to see why this card works in these decks.

Commander decks built around these two commanders play a lot of creatures with defender, of which most of these creatures the toughness is (a lot) higher than their power. In many situations you can think of Wave of Reckoning is an a-symmetrical board wipe.

Wait! What?! The Urza's Saga version of Back to Basics is actually at its lowest price point since half a year. This has all to do with the reprint in Ultimate Masters, which by the way sells for only $35. If you needed this card, now might be the time to pick one or two up.
