Weekly Winners (48)

Modern and EDH are hot this week! We've seen some price jumps in modern, and one spike in EDH.

Find out now which cards will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Wheel and Deal (+153,2% | $4,45) ALL TIME HIGH

Wheel and Deal

This obscure card is up a whopping $3.50 in a matter of days. But why? Price is up, so people are selling this card to people who volunteer to put down $4.50 for this card.

Questions come to mind instantly: what am I missing? Why is this card good? Why would I let my opponent(s) draw a completely new hand, for 3U, while I can only draw one card? Wheel and Deal is not played in any competitive decks. No tournament winners, so that only leaves the option of casual play. Who in earth would be happy to supply their opponents with a new hand in a lategame multiplayer casual game? Nobody! So it's a dead card in most decks, right?

But I have found an answer: it's commander. To be more specific: Nekusar, the Mindrazer. With Nekusar you force your opponents to draw cards and punish them for their greed. You will punish them for having to many cards, for drawing cards, for discarding and for having to many cards in hand. It's evil.

Nekusar deck pilots will be asking their opponents this question: Why are you hitting yourself?

If you want to learn more about the Nekusar deck? Check out this blog post from the commander theory blog.

It's interesting to see more and more EDH staples increasing in price. Since the release of commander 2013 we've seen EDH cards popping up in our interests.

#2 Splinter Twin (+106,8% | $10) ALL TIME HIGH

Splinter Twin

Splinter Twin has jumped to $10 thanks to a run on the cards across all the continents on the world (barring Antarctica maybe).

And actually this price jump was predicted on Reddit 6 days ago. If you want more info on how this card jumped so quickly check out the reddit thread.

#3 Phyrexian Obliterator (+21.6% | $17) ALL TIME HIGH

Phyrexian Obliterator

Phyrexian Obliterator is an interesting story. The card has jumped in price this week, but there are no (paper magic) results for this deck yet. Traders and players think that mono-black devotion might be the new thing for Modern and are speculating on this card.

But the mono black devotion deck in modern still has to net some results outside MTGO play. And since tournaments up there are down for the time being, we won't be getting any results from dailies. Making is harder to predict if Phyrexian Obliterator will really be that good.

Some pro players like Mike Flores, Adrian Sullivan and Brian Kibler have been testing Phyrexian Obliterator together with Domri Rade, so that will be another option for obliterator as well.

When looking at the actual gameplay, how good is Phyrexian Obliterator? Yes it helps with devotion, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. But when playing a non-mono black deck, how would you cast Phyrexian Obliterator, without having more black mana? And in time?

Check out Mike Flores' article on Domri + Obliterator

And a final note: card prices are not only influenced by the amount of competitive play, but also through availability. Phyrexian Obliterator is a mythic rare from the third set in a block. So the card is scarce, ad even more so because the card fits nicely as a one-off in any mono-black casual deck.

Also interesting!

After last week's post, I got some requests to write more about cards that are steadily rising or becoming more interesting slowly. So I'll be giving you some links to other interesting cards this week:

Diochan, Artful Beauty (CA): -12,8% ALL TIME LOW @ $4.99
The P3K copy is also at a low point around $44.00. Please note: there is little trade in these cards, so price variations are not really meaningful. In this case, both copies are low and steadily so.
