The new standard meta is settling in, and the cards from Shadows over Innistrad are now also settling in to their more realistic, post-prerelease prices. But some pieces are on the rise. So, once again,  just in time for FNM, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

See something interesting, or do you have a question? Send me a tweet: @MTGPeter

#1 Nahiri, the Harbinger +78.7% ($21.94)

Nahiri, the Harbinger

Planeswalkers always get a lot of attention, and -most of the time- a lot of hype the moment they were spoiled. They usually end up in any Standard deck that runs the colors of the card, simply because the average power of a planeswalker is higher than the average mythic rare. And the price of planeswalkers are always higher, because they are sought after because of their flavor. Nahiri, the Harbinger shows up in Mardu Midrange and Naya Midrange, two decks that make out only a small percentage of the metagame. So it is not the amount of Standard play that drives up the price.

Sometimes planeswalkers see play across formats. Nahiri, the Harbinger spiked this week because Jeff Hoogland (among others) are brewing decks in Modern and even Legacy containing Nahiri, the Harbinger. Since speculators (and players) keep track of new brews, Nahiri, the Harbinger has became an interesting card to invest/ trade into. The card has potential because of its cross-format play, the possibility of new brews and the simple fact that it is an planeswalker.

#2 Brain in a Jar +181.1% ($2.67)

Brain in a Jar

Not every Magic deck needs to be super expensive. Creating budget decks is something that SaffronOlive of MTGGolfish is known for, and though his post I became aware of this new, fun budget deck that has Brain in a Jar as its primary focus.

I am not sure if SaffronOlive was the first to come up with this deck since other writers have focussed on the card as well. Melissa DeTora wrote a great piece about Brain in a Jar and how to build a strategy around the card.

#3 Part the Waterveil +134.2% ($5.27)

Part the Waterveil

Always look out for cards that grant extra turns. People always want to try and put it into a combo, or try to maximize their effect by building a deck around it. The problem with these types of cards is however, that getting an extra turn is so mana intensive, you are better of not casting it and just putting new threats on the board. When extra turn effects are not mana intensive, they tend to have serious drawbacks like with Final Fortune or Temporal Extortion

Part the Waterveil is one of the expensive kind. However, control decks seem to be viable in Standard, and control decks can take advantage of getting extra turns. But, to really understand why this card is up in price, scroll up just a little and check out the Mono-U brains deck again. Part the Waterveil is played in combination with Brain in a Jar. By putting on the last counter, you can cast Part the Waterveil for just (1). And that leaves all your mana untapped to play other sweet things. Or in the case of Mono-U brains, you can swing an extra turn with your Zombie tokens.

Also note that Part the Waterveil sometimes sees play in Modern as well. Just every now and then, in rogue or lower tiered decks. And don't forget EDH, check out what commanders are associated with the card.

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
