Weekly Winners - Unban & SOI release update

08 Apr
by Peter

This week only, I present you a completely different Weekly Winners. Because of the recent bans and unbans in Modern, there has been a lot of movement. And, because today is SOI release day, I also present you the latest prerelease price changes on SOI cards. So, once again, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

See something interesting, or do you have a question? Send me a tweet: @MTGPeter

Modern Thopter/Sword

The most movements involve the Thopter/Sword combo, with which you can gain a lot of life, make a lot of tokens and even get a lot of extra turns. It is possible to build a competely new, innovative deck for this combo, but it is also possible to refit existing decks with the combo. If you want to see a Thopter/Sword deck in action, and learn how the deck exactly works, check out Pascal Maynard's recent video about a Thopter/Sword deck. Although the combo is powerful, it is in itself not an 'on the spot' winning combo deck, but it can be backbreaking for aggro type decks.

If you want to learn more on other deck possibilities, check out Reid Duke's article on the bans and unbans.

Winners

The following cards gained in value after the unban announcement.

Thopter Foundry +2144.99% ($11)

Thopter Foundry

Sword of the Meek +322.0% ($21.14)

Sword of the Meek

Time Sieve +263.6% ($10.98)

Time Sieve

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas +185% ($44)

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Ancestral Vision +102.5% ($44.52)

Ancestral Vision

The unban was surprising, the spike that followed was not. Ancestral Vision can be played with Thopter/Sword, but it also fits in other decks, that can use that blue card advantage to force the game. The $44+ price tag on Ancestral Vision is a result of its unban, but also a result of the card seeing play in Legacy. Several Legacy decks run the card, and it already had a $18 price tag in the months leading to its modern unban.

Shadows over Innistrad release update

Today, SOI is officially released. You might have noticed the SOI icon in the graphs already. MTGStocks has a set page for all sets, and also for SOI. Check out the page to see a list you can filter, so you can create a good overview of the card prices in the set. Also check out the expected value of a booster and boosterbox. Please be aware that the $4.22 EV is very high, because cards tend to be overvalued in the weeks leading up to the release of a set. Expect many prices to tank in the coming weeks.

Like I just said, prices tend to be overhyped leading up to the release. For your convenience, I have listed the latest winners and losers below, so you can at least arrive prepared and knowledgeable on this weekend's release events. Prices can be volatile, so I can advise you to read up on the prices over the weekend, so you will be able to get the most out of your trades.

More from Peter:

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

Weekly Winners 2021 - 07

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
