Weekly Winners (44)

Today the third installment in your weekly MTG finance update! Just in time for tonight's FNM. Find out now which cards will be the talk of the town tonight.

Slow Week

Week 44 was a rather slow week when viewed from a price and popularity perspective. We've seen the launch of Commander 2013 of course, but that release didn't bring big changes to card prices. Of course the cards from Commander 2013 have been added to the database and are in the top rising cards, but it's prices are still pretty fluid and we can't say too much about it yet.

But, have no fear. We do have some interesting price changes and weekly winners for you. Not only from a standard format perspective, but also for eternal formats Legacy and Modern.

Mutavault (+7,2% | $21,76)

Mutavault

After the reprint of Mutavault, the price dropped significantly. But Mutavault is back. And not only the morningtide version, but also the M14 printing of the card (the black line in the graph). The M14 printing jumped +33% in the past 20 days. How much is that? A lot. M14 Mutavault is at the same price level now ($20) as the original printing two days ago.

M14 Mutavault is at the same price level now ($20) as the original printing two days ago.

This manland is featured in many recent standard-decks, including some top mono-black finished of the SCG Invitational. Check those decks out in our deck database. Just like last week Brian Braun Duin was partly responsible for this jump in price and popularity. And it seems that collectors and traders have chosen to pick up the M14 printing because it had a more friendly pricing.

But standard aside, Mutavault is also played in these Legacy tribal decks:

  1. Merfolks
  2. Slivers (a rogue deck at this time)

It significance is easy to see. Mutavault is a either a merfolk or a sliver. So when you have a Lord of Atlantis and/or other lords out, that Mutavault is suddenly a fatty that counts towards some extra lethal damage. In Legacy, every turn can be you last and swinging with one more creature might just be enough.

Flusterstorm ( +5,4% | $20 )

Flusterstorm

Another Legacy staple is doing well this past week. Flusterstorm is and will be one of the favourite sideboard staples in Legacy. It's especially effective against storm combo decks. These decks try to drop mana acceleration, tutors and protective spells, only to get enough storm to throw a Tendrils of Agony at you.
If you time it right, you'll face your comboing opponent with a "counter target spell, unless your opponent pays 8" (or more). In other words a one blue, multiple Force Spike. You will be able to counter that Tendrils of Agony and giving all copies an extra 1 mana tax to resolve. But barring your opponent from resolving Burning Wish or Infernal Tutor also does the trick.

Flusterstorm is not only effective against combo, it's also useful against other combo decks like Sneak and Show or Reanimator. Not as much, but Flusterstorm will still be able to counter a combopiece with a lot of power with little mana. Great when you have a Force of Will in hand as well.

It's no surprise that Legacy's aggro control decks run flusterstorm, either mainboard or sideboard:

  1. Miracle Control
  2. Patriot
  3. RUG Delver
  4. BUG Control
  5. Team America

On a sidenote, Sneak & Show and OmniTell decks run flusterstorms sometimes as well. For the same reason: combo protection.

Commander 2013 mashup

Although it's not possible to say much yet about this new set, but I can't leave you hanging; so here a quick refence of the commander cards with most change of the past week:

More from Peter:

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

Weekly Winners 2021 - 12

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

Weekly Winners 2021 - 07

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
